“He who laughs last, laughs best.”

Proverb attributed to John Heywood's 1546 book of proverbs.

For a modern take on the words, how about this?

“They who laugh last, laugh best.”

Meaning: If you can outlast your troubles,
and have a hearty guffaw at the ridiculousness of it all,
you will have succeeded by any meaningful measure of success.

And who can help in that endeavor?

Dogs, of course.
Dogs who know that snow is an excuse to slide down a hill,
food of any kind (except possibly bananas and lettuce)
is cause for celebration,
and regular naps are the key to happiness.

The dogs know this,
and so of course,
after the humans have scurried and hurried
and bustled
hither and yon . . .

. . . the dogs have the last laugh.
